Emporia Police used a Taser on a man who came into the department’s lobby with a knife in hand Monday morning.
The incident began unfolding shortly after 9 am after a man described as “in an emotional crisis” went to Police headquarters. Police Capt. Ray Mattas says a negotiator began talking with the man and got him to surrender the knife, but discussions broke down afterward and the man turned towards officers.
The man was eventually Tasered. Mattas says a first attempt at using the Taser did not work and the man tried to run, but “additional” Taser deployments were successful.
The currently-unnamed man was taken to Newman Regional Health for observation and treatment.
Additional details about the incident are pending. No injuries to law enforcement or Emporia Police support staff were reported. Mattas says officers will pursue formal criminal charges in this incident.
