The nearly 15 dogs brought to the Emporia Animal Shelter under emergency conditions are faring well so far.
Humane Society of the Flint Hills Director Stephanie Achille says the dogs are mostly good-tempered so far. Several have unspecified medical conditions that need attention.
The shepherd-mix dogs came to the Animal Shelter through a collaboration involving the shelter, Humane Society, Emporia Police and Lyon County Sheriff’s Office after a recent eviction from an unspecified Emporia address. Achille says the tenant left the dogs at the property after she vacated.
The intake comes at a time when the shelter is already full. Achille says the shelter has enough large dog crates, but it needs dog food and financial donations to take care of the dogs’ medical needs.

1 pm Tuesday: Nearly 15 shepherd-mix dogs rescued after recent eviction from undisclosed Emporia address
The Humane Society of the Flint Hills and Emporia Animal Shelter are working together with Emporia Police and Lyon County deputies on an emergency dog rescue operation.
Humane Society Director Stephanie Achille tells KVOE News the local animal agencies have been working with a property owner at a currently unspecified address in Emporia, with the goal being a surrender. However, the tenant was evicted and did not take the dogs with her — and with a court order on the table, the timetable for getting the dogs to safety was pushed up.
Achille says close to 15 shepherd-mix dogs are involved, and it’s the first time in “quite some time” the Humane Society and Animal Shelter have been involved in a rescue of this magnitude. Several have skin or other medical conditions and all have very little in the way of socialization aside from feeding time.
Staff and volunteers have put up tarps and outside doghouses, and they are in the process of developing a feeding plan. Achille says help is needed to keep these dogs healthy in the short term.
Under normal circumstances, Achille says an animal hold can range from 72 hours to 10 days, depending on whether the animal is a stray or needs quarantine. With the legal process underway, there’s currently no word on when the dogs could be available for adoption.
