Bobbi and I listened to an engaging talk by a very successful attorney who as a practicing Christian told us about his commitment in helping people in several countries where poverty is a way of life.
One story he shared was set in Uganda in the office of a missionary organization working to support the undernourished people of the area. On a table in the office were two large jars. Both of the jars were filled with rice. Our speaker asked the person running the office what the deal was with the two jars of rice?
It’s pretty simple; “he explained, ”the jar on the left is for people to take rice to feed their family.” He said that “a handful of rice often fed an entire family their evening meal!”
Then he explained, ”the jar on the right was for people with more rice than they needed to share it.”
A simple story of people helping people in a small but effective manner,
That story reminded me that such an opportunity will be available tomorrow right here in Emporia as KVOE holds its 20th annual “Pack the Pantry” food drive for the Salvation Army and Spartan Stop at Emporia High School.
The need has never been greater. The pandemic has made a bad situation worse. This is especially true at the high school where the needs are growing daily according to Spartan Stop coordinator Heather Wagner. She indicated to me that she’s getting new referrals daily to add to the already robust number of students who get daily meals plus the sacks of supplies designed to get kids through the weekend.
Wagner also said hygiene items like shampoo; deodorant and especially toothpaste are greatly needed.
The good news is the KVOE Drive for Food makes helping people in need as easy as dumping some rice in that jar.
