Booster doses have been approved now for all three of America’s COVID-19 vaccines, although the criteria and the timing are different for the single-shot Johnson & Johnson shot and the two-shot offerings from Moderna and Pfizer.
On Friday, an independent panel with the Food and Drug Administration approved boosters for the Johnson & Johnson single-shot vaccine. This will apply to all Johnson & Johnson recipients age 18 and up. The dosage is the same as the initial shot and can be given two months after the first dose.
On Thursday, the panel approved boosters for the two-dose Moderna shot. This, however, is limited to at-risk Americans ages 65 and older as well as those between 18 and 64 who may have underlying medical conditions or could be exposed to coronavirus at work.
The decision on Moderna mirrors one earlier this year on the Pfizer vaccine. Both Moderna and Pfizer boosters can be administered six months after the second dose.
The FDA says there has not been a noted increase in side effects from any of the three vaccine booster doses.
