When 14 shepherd-mix dogs started an emergency intake process at the Emporia Animal Shelter last week, there was really no word on when they could be adopted. Now, according to Humane Society of the Flint Hills Director Stephanie Achille, they could be ready for adoption soon — once basic medical needs are met.
Two dogs will be getting unspecified medical care soon, and Achille says the others will be spayed, neutered and vaccinated as well.
The shepherd-mix dogs were brought to the shelter Oct. 13. Achille says the situation arose after a landlord-tenant issue that led to the dogs being abandoned — at a time when the shelter is already full of dogs and cats. Achille says some of the dogs had worms and mange, but mange has not been extreme and the dogs have largely adapted well to their new surroundings as they await adoption. She says the dogs have been kept in the shelter’s outside runs since they came in, and she says the situation — believed to be the shelter’s largest emergency intake in years, if possibly ever — has meant some “creativity” when it comes to socialization, dog walking and care for animals inside the shelter walls.
Achille also thanked the community for donations of food and money to help with the dogs’ immediate care. She says more donations of food may well be needed by early next week. For more information, call the Animal Shelter at 620-340-6345 or the Humane Society at 620-342-4477.
