Federal funding will be lending a generous boost to the efforts of two local justice agencies.
It was recently announced that both 5th Judicial District Community Corrections and the Council Grove Police Department have been named recipients of grants under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program. The grants are administered through the Kansas Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.
Community Corrections will be receiving $43,212 to support both its Drug Court and Home Court programs that work to identify substance abuse needs and provide proper treatment in addition to addressing transportation and language barriers. In a news release Thursday, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt stated, “we are pleased to support the 5th Judicial District’s efforts to provide these much-needed services.”
Council Grove PD will be receiving $33,527 through the program which, according to a news release from the department, will help facilitate CGPD’s transition to the 800 Mghtz state radio system. The transition, notably made last year by Lyon County law enforcement and emergency personnel, will allow the department to “seamlessly communicate with surrounding agencies including the Morris County Sheriff’s Office.”
Any remaining funds will be used to send two officers to Crisis Intervention Training.
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program is one of, if not, the most prominent provider of federal funding to criminal justice programs across the nation.
