USD 386 Madison Virgil Superintendent-in-waiting Steve Jowers recently summed up the first half of the 2021 fall semester in one word, fast.
Jowers, a recent guest of KVOE’s Morning Show, presented an update on the district’s progress through the current school year saying he believes there is a sense of normalcy beginning to return to the district. He says it is a bit hard to believe that they are already midway through the first semester with parent-teacher conferences coming up next week.
Jowers says a major focus he has had this year is getting to better know district staff and helping them maintain a focus on student learning despite any obstacles that may be in their way.
On the COVID-19 front, aside from an early quarantine due to a COVID-19 exposure, Jowers says it has been “smooth sailing” through the majority of the semester. Jowers says the district is maintaining COVID-19 policies for the safety of staff and students including working closely with the Greenwood County Health Department to develop the best protocols possible.
Jowers also reports the district recently applied for and received an ELC grant that will allow the district to hire two registered nurses at both the elementary and high schools. Jowers is set to take over as superintendent from interim Superintendent Mike Argabright next academic year after the resignation of former superintendent Stu Moeckel last year.
Jowers previously served as principal for Madison Elementary School and also taught at Olpe Elementary.
