Several Lyon County roads remain closed after heavy rainfall early Saturday, and it remains to be seen if scattered heavy rainfall from early Sunday will aggravate the situation.
On Saturday, the Lyon County Emergency Communications Center has announced the closure of the following roads:
*900 block Road J
*1000 block Road J
*1400 block Road J
*Road P between 140 and 150; between 150 and 160
*Road R between 150 and 160
*Road 150 between N and P; between P and R; between R and S
The closures followed anywhere from 2-4 inches of rainfall in the Emporia city limits early Saturday, including almost 2.5 inches of rain at the KVOE studios. Sunday totals to this point have not been as impressive:
*KVOE studios: 0.10 inches
*Emporia Municipal Airport: 0.22 inches
*Neosho Rapids: 0.30 inches
The current forecast eliminates any afternoon rainfall, so the rest of the day should be dry and mild once a line of storms clears the area. Showers and storms could return late Tuesday night, with some severe weather possible.

2:30 pm Saturday: Lyon County roads near Emporia closed after heavy rain
Heavy rainfall from early Saturday has translated to road closures near Emporia.
The Lyon County Emergency Communications Center has announced the closure of the following roads:
*900 block Road J
*1000 block Road J
*1400 block Road J
*Road P between 140 and 150; between 150 and 160
*Road R between 150 and 160
*Road 150 between N and P; between P and R; between R and S
The road closures follow scattered heavy rain across Lyon County, with 2.4 inches of rain reported at the KVOE studios and several other reports of two-plus inches from early Saturday:
*10th and Burns: 4 inches
*10th and Weaver: 2.3 inches
*Neosho Rapids: 2.3 inches
*Olpe: 0.60 inches

Additional showers and storms are possible from sunset Saturday to early Sunday, with more rainfall possible Sunday afternoon. Areas north of the Kansas Turnpike and Interstate 35 are now in a marginal severe weather risk, mainly for hail and wind, but heavy rain is also possible. On Sunday, areas along and east of a line from Harveyville to Emporia to Teterville have a marginal risk of severe weather. Additional severe is possible Tuesday evening.

8 am Saturday: Early morning rainfall dumps more than two inches on portions of KVOE listening area Saturday
Rainfall has taken a pause after more than two inches of precipitation was dumped on portions of the listening area through the early morning hours Saturday.
The KVOE Studios received 2.4 inches of rainfall after storms developed around 3 am. The moderate to heavy rainfall triggered an early morning urban and small stream flood advisory for Lyon County which has since expired.
Additional area totals:
*Hammond Heights: 2.1 inches
*South Weaver: 2.65 inches
*North of Allen: 0.10 inches
*Emporia Municipal Airport: 1.13 inches
So far there have not been any road closures due to the recent rainfall. Chances of precipitation continue off and on Saturday with a slight chance of severe storm activity possible in the evening hours along and north of Interstate 35 and US Highway 50.
Stormy conditions will continue Sunday with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon hours. There is a possibility some of those storms could be strong to severe.
Conditions begin to stabilize Sunday evening with mostly clear skies and temperatures in the low 40’s. Rainfall and storm chances will return to the forecast Tuesday with a 20 percent chance of showers in the afternoon hours with chances continuing into the evening.

7 am Saturday: Early morning rain totals lead to urban and small stream flood advisory for Lyon County
Early morning storm systems have not brought much in the way of severe activity, however, it has dumped a large amount of rainfall in the area.
As such, an urban and small stream flood advisory has been issued for Lyon County until 9 am Saturday morning. At the KVOE Studios, we have received 2.4 inches of rainfall. At Hammond Heights, a total of 2.1 inches have fallen since 6 pm Friday.
Emporia and Olpe are at the top of the list of communities that will likely experience flooding issues according to the National Weather Service, however, all county residents need to be mindful of the potential. Additionally, drivers should not try to pass over any roadways that have water over the top of them and are advised to turn around don’t drown.
Rainfall and scattered thunderstorm activity are forecasted to continue off and on throughout the day Saturday with a 50 percent chance of precipitation in the forecast Saturday afternoon with a slight risk of severe storms possible after sunset Saturday. The main weather risk is large hail.
Another round of potentially strong to severe storms is possible Sunday afternoon with hail and damaging winds as the main concerns. Weather conditions begin to stabilize Sunday evening with mostly clear skies and lows in the lower 40s.
The next chance of rainfall and thunderstorms comes Tuesday with a 20 percent chance of showers in the daytime followed by chances of showers and thunderstorms in the evening hours.
