A car-deer crash east of Emporia sent the driver to Newman Regional Health for treatment.

Lyon County Deputy Nathan Rankin says the crash happened on Interstate 35 near mile marker 135, or near Road R-1, shortly before 8:30 pm. Rankin says the driver, 62-year-old Mary Coddington of Emporia, had a deer hit the driver’s side of her car. The force of impact caused the driver’s side airbags to deploy, but Coddington kept her vehicle under control and pulled over to the shoulder.
Initially, there was a concern for a possibly unresponsive juvenile. However, that person was simply asleep in the back seat and was not hurt in the wreck.
Coddington was taken to Newman Regional Health for suspected minor injuries. She was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.
11 pm Saturday: One to Newman following vehicle vs deer collision east of Emporia
One person was taken to Newman Regional Health after a vehicle collided with a deer east of Emporia early Saturday evening.
Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies and EMS were called to Interstate 35 mile marker 134 southbound two miles east of Emporia shortly before 7:20 pm. The initial call was for an injury accident with an unresponsive juvenile according to Deputy Tera Gifford.
Once on scene, emergency responders found a juvenile asleep in the backseat, however, they were unharmed. The driver of the vehicle was taken to Newman with what are being called minor injuries.
