Beginning Sunday, local residents will need to dial 10 digits if they want their phone calls to go through.
Mandatory ten-digit dialing will be required for all residents living in the 620 and 785 area codes. local calls dialed with only seven digits will not go through, and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed.
The change in dialing is occurring in an effort to prevent problems with reaching the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline which was abbreviated to 988 following approval by the Federal Communications Commission last July.
The ten-digit dialing requirement will not apply to three-digit abbreviated numbers for emergency or relay services such as 911 or 711. Residents are encouraged to check contact information on all business and personal items to ensure the area code is included.
