Area residents went the distance, just over 500 yards to be exact, all to support the work of Camp Alexander Saturday.
The fourth annual .5K for Camp A was held at Harry and Lloyds bar in Americus with a tremendous turnout. Participants took a quick stroll around the block before returning to the bar to enjoy some frosty beverages, a meal, minnow racing and a live auction.
Organizer Carla Fessler says the community has always been overly generous when it comes to supporting the camp.
Funds raised by the event will be coupled with funds generated through the upcoming Emporia Community Foundation Match Day next month. Fessler says those funds will go a long way in helping provide local children with a one-of-a-kind summer camp experience.
Fessler adds funds will also go towards regular maintenance, upkeep and additions to the camp which hosts a slew of different activities from weddings, to family reunions and, most recently, bike races on an annual basis.
According to Fessler between 75 to 100 individuals were on hand for the event with a preliminary total of $3,000 raised, however, Fessler believes the final total could be much higher. Final totals should be announced by Monday at the earliest.
