The 2021 general election is now just about a week away.
Two voter processes continue at this time, the in-office advance vote and mail ballots. Lyon County Clerk Tammy Vopat says time is now running out to apply for a mail ballot.
The deadline is 5 pm Tuesday. Over 340 mail ballots have been sent to Lyon County voters and just under a third of those have been returned.
Meanwhile, turnout — aside from a decent start at the offsite voting event at the Fairgrounds Anderson Building on Sept. 16 — has been slow. Vopat says around 170 people have voted at the courthouse, with close to 140 voting at the Anderson Building.
Mayor, city council, city commission and school board positions are on the ballot. In Lyon County, voters are also being asked to extend a one-percent sales tax 15 years to benefit a range of projects at the city and county level. Chase County voters are being asked to decide if liquor sales by the drink can be allowed in public places without any requirement that some of the gross receipts come from food sales. Osage County voters are asked to decide on a new law enforcement facility to be funded by a half-cent sales tax.
