The Hillcrest apartment complex is under new ownership.
The Hillcrest was put up on the market earlier this fall and sold quickly after its presence on the market was announced on KVOE in late September. Terms of the sale are not being announced, including the sale price and the buyer’s identity. Realtor Christian Keisler says a local investment group purchased the property with an interest in the building’s history and architecture. Kisler says the new ownership group wants to improve the property and keep its historic nature intact.
Paul and Deb Challender owned the property.
The complex was built in 1928 and originally was the home of St. Mary’s Hospital, which actually started operations in 1884 through the Sisters of St. Francis in Lafayette, Indiana, according to the Catholic Health Association, and moved to 400 West 15th shortly after construction. The hospital closed in 1991 after several years of substantial financial losses.
As an apartment complex, the over 70,000-square-foot building has 34 units, with efficiencies to 3-bedroom living spaces all included.
