The Greater Emporia Area Disaster Relief Fund is concentrating its work on recognizing the work of healthcare staff and frontline workers.
Plans are in place for ice cream socials next week to honor employees at Newman Regional Health and Lyon County Public Health, according to United Way CEO Mickey Edwards.
This follows deliveries of Main Street gift certificates and goodie bags for USD 253 nursing and support staff.
In addition, the Disaster Relief Fund has created a Kudoboard on its website, www.geadisasterrelieffund.org, where people can post a thank-you message recognizing the work of frontline workers. The committee is also partnering with Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow to organize the community ofrenda at 915 Commercial. It’s one of two ofrendas honoring those who have died from COVID-19 as part of Emporia’s Dia de los Muertos Celebration, with the other ofrenda at the Emporia Main Street Office.
The Greater Emporia Area Disaster Relief Fund started shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic came to Lyon County. It involves the Emporia Community Foundation, Emporia Main Street, United Way of the Flint Hills and KVOE.
