An investigation is ongoing by Emporia Police after a child suffered a gunshot wound Friday.
According to Emporia Police Cpt. Lisa Hayes in the early morning hours Friday, officers were called to Newman Regional Health for a report of a gunshot wound to a three-year-old child. The initial investigation by police indicates the child gained access to a firearm and accidentally shot himself.
The child’s name is not being released, but Hayes says the injuries were reportedly non-life-threatening. The child was transferred from Newman to a currently undisclosed hospital.
The incident occurred in east-central Emporia, however, an exact location and additional details are pending following further investigation by Emporia Police. Hayes says “This incident should be a reminder to gun owners with children in the home to always keep guns locked and away from children.”
Emporia Police do provide free gun locks to the general public which can be picked up inside the EPD lobby at 518 Mechanic.
