The extreme wind conditions from Thursday have eased somewhat, but a breezy day is still on tap across the KVOE listening area.
Wind gusts went above 50 mph at the Emporia and Eureka airports and stayed above 40 mph at both those airports and the Burlington airport for most of the day. Wind gusts have also been above 40 mph late Thursday night at the Emporia airport.
Despite the constant high winds, power outages were isolated and not large-scale. Evergy spokesperson Andrew Baker says the utility does what it can to make sure its grid is reliable during prolonged high-wind events.
Wind advisories were extended and then canceled for all area counties.
The main weather issue now is our first potential frost of the season Saturday. A frost advisory is up for Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties from 3-9 am Saturday with a separate advisory affecting Chase and Greenwood counties from 2-9 am. Temperatures early Saturday could be in the low to mid-30s, which could generate enough frost to kill outdoor plants if they are left uncovered.
