Sentencing did not take place as expected Friday for an Emporia woman who pleaded to lesser charges in a case involving stolen guns, a stolen vehicle and illegal drug activity dating back to the end of last year.
Emporian Mariel Ascencio, first listed as Mariel Martin when charges were formally announced in December 2020, was scheduled for sentencing after her plea in August to heroin possession and being a felon in possession of a firearm. However, at her defense team’s request, sentencing was pushed to Dec. 17.
Ascencio was originally charged with nine counts after she and co-defendant Wyatt Everly were arrested at Emporia’s Budget Host Inn, 1830 East Highway 50, after a stolen vehicle was discovered at the motel, according to Emporia Police. Court documents provided to KVOE News indicate both Ascencio and Everly had several guns either in their hotel room or in storage facilities when they were arrested, as well as ammunition, firearm accessories, a machete, three small bags of heroin, and a wide range of drug paraphernalia. Numerous driver’s licenses were also discovered along with several birth certificates, Social Security cards and vehicle titles.
Everly pleaded no contest earlier this summer as well, accepting a plea agreement on single counts of possessing heroin with intent to distribute and stolen property. He has been sentenced to almost five years in prison combined for the two counts.
The car found at the hotel was allegedly stolen from a rental car company in Wichita. The guns were allegedly stolen from Otoe County, Nebraska.
