A new legacy fund has been established through the Emporia Community Foundation honoring the memories of a Chase County family.
A news release from ECF Executive Director Becky Nurnberg Friday announced the establishment of the Keller Legacy Fund in memory of Nancy Keller and her parents Wayne and Martha. Nancy Keller, a native of Chase County, approached former ECF Director Ken Calhoun back in 2010 about the possible endowment of the fund wishing to honor the memories of her parents.
Following Nancy Keller’s passing last year in her home in Arizona, the ECF was notified by the executor of her estate and the fund became fully funded through an IRA, an annuity and life insurance. Nurnberg unveiled the fund’s total, $242,349.40, during a recent Chase County Commission meeting.
Plans are to use the fund for the preservation and restoration of the Chase County Courthouse at the request of Nancy Keller who wrote in a letter to the ECF, “My bequests to preserve the Courthouse…….is reflective of my appreciation of Chase County and gratitude for growing up there. It is a pleasure to know that I will contribute to the preservation of such an icon as the Chase County Courthouse.”
The majority of legacy funds, according to the aforementioned news release from Nurnberg, are endowed funds meaning a percentage will be paid out to the designated recipients each year with the fund lasting for “perpetuity.”
