Ignite Emporia is hoping Lyon County residents and employees, especially those with relatively young children, respond to a survey now underway on childcare needs.
Ignite Emporia Director Rob Gilligan says childcare has been pointed out as one of several major barriers to local workforce development. He says the online survey should only take a few minutes to complete, but it should create a well-rounded picture of Lyon County’s current needs — and it may point out some solutions moving forward.
The participation deadline is Nov. 15, with the goal of having preliminary survey results in hand by the end of the year. Gilligan says there is a belief currently that more second-shift childcare opportunities may be needed, the survey was designed to see if there actually is that gap in coverage locally.
Ignite Emporia has partnered with the University of Kansas Center for Public Partnerships and Research on the survey. Gilligan says it’s not a new issue, but the COVID-19 pandemic has apparently made issues more noticeable.
