The Oklahoma man facing court proceedings both in his home state and in Kansas will likely have federal trial in Oklahoma soon.
Jerry Ray Brown, age 43, was set for federal trial to begin Monday in Tulsa on charges of robbing two banks in separate incidents last year. However, Brown was arrested late last month in Lyon County on flee and elude and chase charges after he allegedly tried to take fuel from a Kansas Department of Transportation tractor and then led local authorities on a chase before crashing into a utility pole near South Commercial and Norton. Federal prosecutors issued a writ of habeas corpus to Lyon County authorities, essentially an order to transfer Brown, to start the trial process. He’s accused of taking around $320,000 in total from the two banks. A new trial date could be set shortly, according to the Justice Department.
Brown also was set for a preliminary hearing last week in Tulsa after allegedly embezzling over $70,000 from a 2019 house remodeling contract. With Brown still in jail locally at the time of that hearing, the only hearing scheduled in the embezzlement case is a bond forfeiture review on Feb. 15.
Depending on how court proceedings develop in Oklahoma, Brown could have a preliminary hearing on the local charges Dec. 1 in Lyon County District Court.
