Good’s Cash Saver turned into Emporia’s version of Supermarket Sweep early Saturday.
The Rotary Club of Emporia brought its Grocery Grab to the store for the third straight year, and Emily Brooks won the honors to go through the store as part of a random draw. Brooks had to spend her first minute in the meat section before browsing most of the rest of the store, and she says she had a definite strategy in mind.
Brooks easily bested the prior mark from two years ago in clearing almost $1,500 worth of groceries, tax included. Good’s Cash Saver store manager James Miller was impressed with Brooks’ approach.
Alex Mosakowski of the Rotary Club says was impressed with the final haul, which included three full shopping carts.
Part of Brooks’ focus on baby formula became apparent after all her items were rung up. Brooks donated two flats of formula to the John and Frances Ice Kitchen and Food Pantry and two more to Corky’s Cupboard. Ice Kitchen representative Darby O’Neill says the whole event demonstrated the community’s generosity.
Corky’s Cupboard representative Aron Dody says this will help allay ongoing hunger concerns with students at Emporia State University.
The remaining finalists, including the food pantries, Susan Cates, Carol Alderman and Sandra Butter, took home $50 gift cards from Good’s.
Proceeds will benefit Family Promise of the Flint Hills. Mosakowski anticipates around $5,000 will go to Family Promise.
