For the 31st year, Emporia’s Church of Christ fed the masses with their annual Thanksgiving Community Meal Thursday.
Hundreds of visitors stopped by the church to pick up a meal or grab a seat at a table to enjoy a delicious holiday feast prepared by the church’s congregation. On the menu of course was plenty of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans and a wide selection of homemade desserts.
Since its inception, the community meal has always provided much more than just a hot meal for those who stop by the church to eat. Pastor Neil Taylor, who has led the church for the past 10 years, says it has also provided much-needed community and fellowship for those who are not fortunate enough to get to spend the holiday with their loved ones.
Taylor adds that the sense of community is not only important for those who walk through the doors to eat, but also for the congregation members who prepare and serve the food. When asked his feelings on the event’s longevity Taylor says the only word that comes to mind is “blessing.”
Throughout the day roughly 500 meals were served according to Pastor Taylor.
