The Emporia High basketball teams traveled to Highland Park to open the 2021-2022 season, and the results Friday night were mixed.
The Emporia High girls basketball team opened their season with a 59-21 win. The Class 5A 10th-ranked Lady Spartans forced 29 turnovers in the game and pulled away from Highland Park with a 31-4 second half. Coach Carolyn Dorsey says the Lady Spartans struggled to find their rhythm early but responded well after halftime.
Highland Park won the boys game 79-45. The Scots set the tone with a 25-11 lead at the end of one quarter and led by 22 at half. The closest Emporia High got in the second half was 14. Coach Beau Welch saw some good things offensively. The defense, he says, needs some work.
