Among the business for the USD 253 Emporia Board of Education this week is a discussion on having trimesters or semesters.
The Emporia district moved from the traditional semester schedule to trimesters during the 2016-2017 academic year. Wednesday’s board discussion comes as part of a review of current practices, with the focus on the impact of trimesters versus semesters on graduation rates, ACT scores, attendance and other emphasis points.
The report on the trimester approach follows the latest academic report involving kindergarten readiness, graduation rates and postsecondary success.
In other business, board members will get the latest updates on COVID-19 response and the Building for the Future construction. Board members will also discuss a new pilot grant agreement between the district and the Kansas Department for Children and Families which includes student support specialists as funded by KDCF for an 18-month period. An executive session for student remote access is also on the agenda.
The meeting is at 7 pm Wednesday at Mary Herbert. There will also be a reception at 5:30 pm for outgoing board members Mike Crouch, Doug Epp and Melissa Ogleby.
