Washburn Rural defeated both the Emporia High girls and boys basketball teams Tuesday night.
Rural won the girls’ game 52-41. It was a close game with the Lady Spartans leading at the end of the quarter 7-6, trailed at halftime 20-19, and were tied at the end of the 3rd quarter. Washburn Rural dominated the 4th quarter outscoring the Lady Spartans 20-9.
Emporia High Coach Carolyn Dorsey was proud of her teams’ effort.
Gracie Gilpin led Emporia High with 21 points. The Lady Spartans are now 1-1 to start the season.
Washburn Rural won the boys game 65-34. Emporia high held an early 9-8 lead before Rural went on a 17-1 run and never looked back.
Emporia High Coach Beau Welch liked the start of the game.
Parker Leeds led the Spartans in scoring with 16 points. The Emporia High boys are now 0-2 to start the season.
Both the Emporia High girls and boys will host Topeka Seaman Friday night in their home opener.
