Coronavirus activity appears to be increasing both locally and nationwide, but seasonal flu activity hasn’t revved up just yet — as Lyon County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Director Jennifer Millbern explains.
About a month ago, Millbern had mentioned some co-infections of strep and flu, strep and COVID or COVID and flu. There have been no reported issues with co-infections since. Millbern encourages residents to get vaccinated against flu before traffic increases, possibly by early next year.
Flu traffic numbers are not immediately available at the county level, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows Kansas at the lowest “minimal” level. Last week saw almost 150 new cases of COVID, along with an increase in active cases from 107 to 173 Monday to Friday and two new deaths to move that total to 94. Lyon County Public Health is now reporting its COVID data once a week on Fridays.
Newman Regional Health Infection Preventionist Ester Knobloch will discuss flu, COVID and other illness traffic at the hospital on KVOE’s 7:15 am Newsmaker segment Thursday.
