If you still have some holiday shopping to do — or haven’t started yet — it’s best to keep some common-sense things in mind so you don’t draw the attention of thieves and other ne’er-do-wells.
Police Capt. Ray Mattas says there are several things you need to consider. Be careful with your payments, regardless of the method. Women should keep their purses close. Once everything is bought, they need to be out of sight.
Porch pirating activity hasn’t picked up locally, but this is the time of year when porch pirates are active. Mattas says one good step is to actively track your packages’ arrival and get those gifts inside as soon as possible. Another step: get a security camera or video doorbell. Postal insurance and technological developments where delivery companies, notably Amazon, can enter your garage, place items and then close your garage, are also options worth considering.
Mattas also encourages you to have good relationships with neighbors, who may also hold your items on a short-term basis while you’re away.
