Local first responders were posted at two major retail stores through the morning hours Saturday in support of Emporia’s Salvation Army.
Emporia Police, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies and members of the Emporia Fire Department were spread out at Bluestem Farm and Ranch Supply and Walmart manning red kettles for the annual Badges United fundraising event.
The annual fundraiser initially began under the title “Battle of the Badges,” however, all three agencies chose to alter the name several years back. Emporia Fire Chief Jack Taylor says the new name is a better representation of the unity and cooperation amongst the different departments.
Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says he appreciates the opportunity to show community members that they are here for them not only on their “worst days” but in all times of need.
Emporia Police Cpt. Scott Stormont referred to events like Badges United as a “nice bonus” to their everyday job.
Once noon rolled around, local law enforcement and firefighters cleared the way for another charitable and community-centered organization to take over the bell ringing. The Emporia Lions Club stepped up to have a turn collecting donations through the early evening hours.
Not only were the Lions on hand to collect donations from local residents, they also made a generous gift of their own matching the first $500 in donations.
Totals from Saturday’s activities are currently pending. This year’s Red Kettle Campaign goal is $75,000. Special bell-ringing events will continue this upcoming week with the Salvation Army’s newest event Real Estate Wednesday at Walmart and Bluestem.
Salvation Army Lt. Mylie Hadden will join KVOE’s Newsmaker segment at 7:15 am Monday with a Kettle Campaign update.
