Outdoor burning is already strongly discouraged areawide Wednesday, and there could well be automatic burn bans across the area as well.
The National Weather Service has issued a fire weather watch for Chase and Greenwood counties for Wednesday afternoon and evening. Any fires that start will be very difficult to control with southwest winds steadily between 30-45 mph and gusts up to 65 mph, combining with relative humidity levels under 20 percent and extremely dry vegetation.
This coincides with a high wind watch for Lyon and all surrounding counties from 9 am to 9 pm Wednesday. Besides the fire danger, there is also a risk of downed tree limbs and scattered to widespread power outages. Travel for high-profile vehicles will also be difficult.
