Healthier Lyon County will be continuing a major safety improvement project into 2022.
During a recent interview on KVOE’s Morning Show, HLC Grant Manager Daphne Mertens discussed an ongoing crosswalk installation project which has been in development for over the past year. According to Mertens, the overall goal is to increase safety for pedestrians in three major traffic areas across town.
Mertens says the need for increased safety has become very apparent over the past few years with the most recent example coming last month when a student at Emporia Middle School was struck by a vehicle at the school.
Mertens says the project involves multiple entities aside from HLC including the Lyon County Multi-Use Path Planning (MUPP) board and the Flint Hills Metropolitan Planning organization based in Manhattan. In cooperation with the Metro Planning Organization, Mertens says Healthier Lyon County will be developing “demo projects” to demonstrate the benefits of the new crosswalks before they’re officially installed.
The demos will allow for data collection and community feedback while in place which will assist with the completion of the final project according to Mertens. She says plans are for the demo crosswalks to be installed at all four locations the week after this coming spring break.
