Christmas is coming Saturday, and Lyon County Public Health is asking you not to give the gift of COVID this week.
Public Health Emergency Preparedness Director Jennifer Millbern is urging basic — and increasingly unpopular — steps to ward off COVID with the delta strain still causing a lot of issues areawide and the omicron variant reported east of the area last week. Having said that, she says it’s important to celebrate the season — but to do so safely.
Millbern also suggests an assessment of your personal situation and your family’s situation, especially if you plan a gathering this weekend. Gatherings should be with fully-vaccinated and boosted immediate family members. If there are larger gatherings, especially with unvaccinated people, Millbern suggests mask use. She also mentions social distancing or moving activities to larger indoor spaces — even outdoors if the weather permits. Indoor activities need to be well ventilated.
Lyon County begins the week with 6,430 total cases since March 2020, a weekly increase of 227 after Public Health had been reporting roughly 160 new cases a week for over a month. Active cases are at 255, the most since January. Deaths are now at 97, up three from the prior week.
