Adoptions are up at the Emporia Animal Shelter.
On KVOE’s Talk of Emporia on Monday, Humane Society of the Flint Hills Director Stephanie Achille said the shelter has processed 400 adoptions so far this year, higher than both the last two years. That traffic hasn’t alleviated the number of cats and dogs coming into the shelter, which remains full after over 700 intakes — although it’s not overflowing at this time.
Residents wanting to adopt a pet can expect at least a 24-hour waiting period and the Humane Society is emphasizing spaying or neutering the pets before they go out the door.
If you’re planning to give the gift of a pet over the next few days, Achille says you need to be “intentional” with your approach. Pets are a present that last the life of the animal, and Achille says that is something people need to keep in mind before making that decision.
