Entering the Christmas holiday, five of the seven counties in the KVOE listening area have at least 1,000 total coronavirus cases since the pandemic started 21 months ago.
Stats released by different counties and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment will be different, due to information lag. KDHE has Lyon County at 6,417 total cases as of Wednesday, over 100 short of the Public Health reported total of 6,519.
As of Wednesday, Lyon County had 211 active cases, 46 of which are considered breakthroughs meaning infections in fully vaccinated residents. Collectively Lyon Public Health has identified 467 breakthrough cases.
Deaths remain at 97 plus one death pending final cause information from KDHE with eight active hospitalizations.
Other totals as reported by KDHE:
*Chase County: 454
*Coffey County: 1,567
*Greenwood County: 1,180
*Morris County: 961
*Osage County: 2,517
*Wabaunsee County: 1,194
At this time, none of our area counties have reported the omicron variant which is now the dominant strain nationwide. In fact, Kansas has only reported 19 cases of the omicron variant, with the closest cases in Franklin and Marion counties.
Both KDHE and Lyon County Public Health will update their dashboards on Monday and Wednesday next week. Public Health will return to its longstanding model of three reports a week beginning Jan. 3.
