Deer hunters who have concerns about chronic wasting disease can get their harvested animals sampled at no cost to them.
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is working with the University of Missouri as part of a three-year research project to gain more insight into where chronic wasting disease is and how it spreads.
Hunters may not have to pay for sampling, but they need to provide the harvest location. GPS coordinates, range-township-section number or nearest intersection are all acceptable.
To get harvested deer sampled, hunters may drop off samples to the Wildlife and Parks Emporia Research and Survey office near 18th and Merchant. The phone number is 620-342-0658. Hunters can also get collection instructions from University of Missouri staff by calling 620-402-4195 or emailing kscwdsurveillance@gmail.com. In addition, hunters can get help in collecting lymph node samples either at the Emporia office or by calling Wanda Shoemaker at 620-366-5894.
