Holiday travel projections are up, however, local and national gas prices are beginning to see moderate decreases as the year begins to wind down.
AAA Kansas Spokesperson Shawn Steward says both regionally and nationally prices have begun to taper down somewhat over the last month to six weeks. Steward says in Kansas alone, the average price per gallon has dropped by 8 cents from $3.05 to $2.97 a gallon.
In Lyon County the average price per gallon is right at $2.96 a gallon with similar to slightly higher prices areawide. In Coffey County the average price is between $2.98 to $3.01, $2.96 is the average price in Chase and Morris counties with prices ranging anywhere from $2.90 a gallon to $3.09 a gallon in Greenwood, Osage and Wabaunsee counties according to Gasbuddy.com.
The decrease in prices comes as AAA is anticipating a large uptick in travel with an estimated 110 million travelers expected to be journeying out over the course of the next few days. Steward says this includes right around 100 million travelers on the roadways which would bring the state within eight percent of the pre-pandemic 2019 travel levels.
With the increased congestion on the roadways, Steward says vigilance will be even more important than before.
Steward adds that residents need to make sure to do a full inspection of their vehicles before they hit the roadways. This includes ensuring batteries are fully charged, tires are properly aired, coolant and antifreeze are full and all other mechanical components are functioning correctly.
In addition to the increased road traffic, Steward says they are anticipating a roughly 184 percent rise in air travel in the coming weeks with just over 6 million individuals flying to different destinations.
