A rise in temperatures after sunset hasn’t been enough to give the Emporia Municipal Airport its sixth daily record high temperature since the Thanksgiving weekend.
Temperatures were forecast to reach 70 degrees, which would have eclipsed the 69-degree high set in 2008. High temperatures climbed to 65 Sunday shortly before 8 pm, held down by persistent cloud cover through the day.
Record highs have been set Nov. 29, Dec. 2, Dec. 14, Dec. 15 and Christmas Eve.
7 am Sunday: Another record high? It’s possible for Sunday, Tuesday afternoons
For much of the last month, we’ve had abnormally warm conditions. That continues at times this upcoming week before a notable cooldown as we get to New Year’s Eve.
After the Emporia Municipal Airport set a record high at 74 degrees on Christmas Eve, breaking the 71-degree high set back in 1955, another record is in jeopardy Sunday. The forecast high is 70 degrees, above the current 69-degree record set in 2008.
Tuesday could see another record as well. The current forecast high is 66 degrees, above the 65 set in 1999.
There have already been several record highs at the Emporia airport since the Thanksgiving weekend:
*Nov. 29 had a high of 77, above the previous record of 74 set in 1998.
*Dec. 2’s high of 79 degrees set the all-time monthly high for a December and surpassed both the daily high of 72 from 2001 and the prior monthly high of 74 set Dec. 5, 2001.
*Dec. 14’s high of 68 degrees was above the prior mark of 65 degrees set in 1965.
*Dec. 15’s high of 76 topped the previous high of 69 degrees set in 2002.
Temperatures will step back significantly by Wednesday with highs only in the mid-30s. Temperatures could climb to the mid-40s Thursday and low 50s Friday before a small cooldown into the upper 40s for New Year’s Day.
