Martin Luther King Jr. Day is nearly upon us and as such local volunteers are asking everyone to do their part to honor King’s legacy by supporting the needs of others.
The Lyon County RSVP Program will be doing its part by collecting food donations for local and area food pantries and are asking you to help stock the shelves. Boxes are available at several locations across Emporia and the local area where residents can simply drop food donations to be collected at the end of the month.
Current locations include:
*Bluestem Farm and Ranch Supply
*Good’s Cash Saver
*Country Mart
*Water’s True Value
*Flint Hills Mall
*Emporia Main Street
*The Friendship Center
*North Lyon County Senior Center
*Olpe Senior Center.
The main item that RSVP volunteers are looking for, according to Kitty Hamilton of the RSVP Program, are supplies for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Hamilton says they are looking for local businesses to partner with where they may house donation boxes through the drive. Donations of additional non-perishable food items will be accepted as well.
Hamilton says it is very important for RSVP to carry out community service projects such as this as MLK Day is meant to be more than just a holiday, but rather a day of service.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, Jan. 17.
