Last year, the Osage County Sheriff’s Office had plans to ask county voters for approval to build a new law enforcement center in Lyndon. As that effort developed, officials found they needed more time to get all their items together — so now the question is part of a special election Feb. 8.
The current plan involves 144 proposed beds, up from 30 currently available, and a facility that will house all aspects of law enforcement and emergency management. Sheriff Chris Wells and Undersheriff Scott Brenner have said the current facilities are in poor shape and need to be replaced. If approved, the new facility could cost upwards of $18 million and would be funded by revenue from holding inmates for other cities and counties.
Following a host of town hall meetings last summer, more public meetings have been announced. The full list is online at KVOE.com, but the schedule includes meetings Jan. 12 and Jan. 20 at the Sheriff’s Office in Lyndon, Jan. 26 at the Melvern Community Building and Feb. 7 at the Osage City Community Building.
