The Emporia Senior Center is closed for at least the next two weeks.
President and CEO Ian Boyd says there has been a positive coronavirus exposure, although no further details about the case are being released. This closes down all Senior Center activities, including bingo. The tentative plan is to reopen Jan. 18.
Boyd tells KVOE News this is the Senior Center’s fifth COVID-related closure since the pandemic started in March 2020. He says the closures greatly affect the facility’s financial stability and both Boyd and the Senior Center Board of Directors are doing what they can to “make ends meet,” although Boyd says that has been a tough process. Last month, the Senior Center raised over $11,000 through its Christmas Gala, combining with annual proceeds from various trusts to trim the 2021 shortfall from over $37,000 to under $14,000.
