Kansas House 76th District Representative Eric Smith has finances on his mind as the legislative session begins next week — and so do most lawmakers, for that matter.
On KVOE’s Morning Show on Thursday, Smith looked at the $2 billion cash balance already in hand with the possibility of that growing by the end of the current fiscal year in July. He says it’s important to remember the current trend of revenues well above expectations won’t last forever, but he also said it’s important for the state to be competitive with its wage and benefit packages. He also said there were several other points worth strong consideration, including increases to Corrections, more money for cybersecurity and the Kansas Board of Regents’ $200 million request to address deferred maintenance and other needs for higher education.
Mental wellness initiatives have Smith’s attention as well.
On tax policy, Smith says he has concerns about eliminating the state sales tax on food because of its $430 million impact on revenues, although he believes that should be lowered.
The 2022 legislative session begins Monday. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly’s State of the State Address will be Tuesday evening.
