2022’s first major schedule adjustment due to the latest spike in COVID-19 cases has been announced.
The Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce stated in a recent news release that it has chosen to postpone the annual chamber dinner scheduled for Friday, Jan. 21. The announcement follows a special meeting Monday where the Lyon County Commission chose to stay the course and continue strongly recommending COVID-19 mitigation efforts rather than issue a mandate dictating practices such as mask use and social distancing.
During that meeting, Public Health Officer Dr. Ladun Oyenuga made several recommendations to the commission including limiting capacity in local venues to 40 percent. Chamber President and CEO Jeanine McKenna says they felt it pertinent to follow this guidance and says if they moved forward with the chamber dinner as scheduled, they would go well over that recommended limit.
McKenna says it is unclear when the meeting will be rescheduled to. McKenna says it will be dependant on several factors including venue availability and the continuation of the current COVID spike.
She tells KVOE News that while it is frustrating to have to postpone the event, it’s not frustrating at the same time because she knows the chamber is “doing the right thing.” For questions or more information regarding the annual meeting visit EmporiaKSChmaber.org or call 620-342-1600.
