USD 251 North Lyon County is adapting to recent changes in COVID-19 policy.
The board received an update on quarantine and isolation policies during its most recent meeting. Here’s Superintendent Bob Blair:
Public Health says individuals need to stay home for five days if they a lab-confirmed COVID-19 infection regardless of vaccination status. If individuals show now symptoms after five days they can leave their home, however, they are told to continue wearing a mask for an additional five days. Unvaccinated residents need to quarantine for at least five days from day of exposure, wear masks whenever around others for at least five days and monitor symptoms for 10 days.
USD 251 North Lyon County had 10 student positives and 35 test-to-learn students this past week along with two staff positives and three staff quarantines.
In other business, the district discussed a study of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems in school buildings, and Blair says both North Lyon County and Northern Heights have parts of their systems that are near the end of life capacity and some that may well be past time for replacement. Blair says this is a long-term discussion involving capital outlay decisions — and that will continue when the district renews talks about whether to have a single campus building for K-12 education at some point in the future.
The district also announced a new principal at Northern Heights. Dave Watkins is currently an assistant principal and activities director at Burlington High School, and he has teaching and administrative experience at Council Grove, Wamego, Waverly and Santa Fe Trail.
