Several grass fires in Lyon and Chase counties are under investigation Tuesday, and Lyon County deputies are asking residents to report anything suspicious they may have seen from Emporia west past Cottonwood Falls.
Lyon County Detective Sgt. Jacob Welsh tells KVOE News there are at least six separate grass fires near Emporia, with four grass fires reported just after noon near Roads 180 and E and two near the Interstate 35-East Sixth Avenue junction before 1 pm. The fires near Emporia followed several in Chase County, including on Lake Road west of Cottonwood Falls, one west of Strong City and another east of Strong City.
Welsh says deputies aren’t calling the fires arson at this time, but there were unspecified signs of a pattern as the situation unfolded. He says fire crews from Lyon County and other nearby counties were stretched thin for over an hour.
Firefighters from across Lyon County were called, along with departments in Strong City and Dunlap.
