The Madison Lady Bulldogs and Olpe boys were both winners in area high school basketball Tuesday night.
The Madison Lady Bulldogs managed to build an early lead and held off a late flurry by Olpeo pick up a 47-36 victory over the Lady Eagles in the girl’s game.
Olpe struggled from the field in the first while Madison used a 10-0 run midway through the first quarter and a near six-minute 14-0 run in the second quarter to build a 26-7 lead heading into halftime. In the second half, Olpe would outscore Madison 31-21 overall but would only come as close as eight to tying the game as the Lady Bulldogs held on for the win.
Madison junior Yolaine Luthi led all scorers with 22 points. Fellow junior Sarah Miser added 14.
Head Coach Vanessa Kresin says it was one of the best starts her team has had this season.
Olpe was led in scoring by junior Mackenna Broyles with 10 points. With the win Madison improves to 6-2 on the year as Olpe falls to 5-7.
In the boy’s game, the Eagles soared over Madison 58-27.
Olpe built an early double-digit lead in the first quarter due in large part to 13 first-quarter points by senior Derek Hoelting. Olpe continued the offensive pressure in the second building their lead to as many as 20 before taking a 33-18 lead into the locker room.
The Eagles didn’t let up in the second half outscoring Madison 25-9 overall en route to their 11th straight win on the year. Hoelting led all scorers with 28 points on the night.
Senior Damon Redeker and junior Truman Bailey both added 11 points. Olpe head coach Chris Schmidt says they got off to a hot start and never looked back.
With the win, Olpe clinched the Lyon County League regular-season title and improve to 11-1. Madison now falls to 6-2.
