A major water line project near Newman Regional Health is now underway.
Eastbound through traffic is now closed between Grand and Chestnut on West 12th as the city’s contractor works to add a new water line in the area. According to City Engineer Jim Ubert, westbound traffic can still travel through the work zone, however, the traffic flow will be down to one lane through the duration of the project.
The work is just the third in a series of six projects set to improve the city’s infrastructure through a $5 million Kansas Department of Health and Environment loan.
Recently the city applied for and received a second loan from KDHE for the same purpose with a number of similar projects already mapped out according to Ubert.
The West 12th project could take up to four months to complete, weather permitting. The work comes after two major waterline breaks in the same vicinity last year, one outside Newman in mid-March and one outside Emporia Christian School in mid-June.
