Lyon and Chase counties are partnering with the Office of the Kansas State Fire Marshal to investigate Tuesday’s grass fire activity.
Lyon County Detective Sgt. Jacob Welsh says six fires are under investigation near Emporia, four near Roads 180 and E and two near the Interstate 35-East Sixth Avenue intersection. All happened between noon and 1 pm.
Chase County Sheriff Richard Dorneker says four fires are under investigation near Cottonwood Falls and Strong City. Those fires developed before the blazes near Emporia were discovered.
Further details about the investigations are pending. Neither the Lyon nor Chase County sheriff’s offices have confirmed any of the fires as arson to this point. For now, the investigations are taking place independently, but Dorneker says there will be constant communication at the county level as they move forward.
