It’s not a record, but there was another notable increase in COVID-19 cases in Lyon County Public Health’s end-of-week report.
Public Health reported 319 new cases between Wednesday and Friday, moving the county total to 8,923 since the pandemic started in March 2020. This means more than a quarter of Lyon County’s estimated population of around 33,000 has been infected with COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic — and it means almost 2,100 Lyon County residents have been infected this month, or approaching the equivalent of one-tenth of Emporia’s estimated population of over 24,000.
Public Health announced over 490 new cases between Monday and Wednesday.
As was the case Monday and Wednesday, one new death was reported, pushing the total death count to 102. Four deaths are awaiting cause confirmation from the state.
So far this week, Lyon County Public Health has reported 660 confirmed cases this week, although that information is in the “data pending” category of its reconfigured dashboard. Last week had 892 cases confirmed, a record high for new cases per week.
