A couple of late rallies came up short for the Emporia State basketball teams at Washburn Saturday.
The Emporia State women trailed by 13 points early in the 4th quarter before going on a 16-6 run to cut the deficit to 3 points but could get no closer.
Emporia State Coach Toby Wynn said it was a step in the right direction.
Tre’Zure Jobe led Emporia State with 15 points, Victoria Price and Ehlaina Hartman both scored 12 points and Karsen Schultz finished with 10 points. The Lady Hornets fall to 9-8 for the season and 4-7 in the MIAA.
In the men’s game, Washburn hit a 3 point shot at the buzzer to slip past the Hornets 68-65. Emporia State trailed for most of the game. They did take a 1 point lead with two minutes to play. Tray Buchanan tied the game at 65 with 13 seconds to play before Jalen Lewis hit the winning shot at the buzzer.
Emporia State Coach Craig Doty said it was a defensive effort.
Jumah’Ri Turner led Emporia State with a game-high 29 points and Tray Buchanan added 18 points.
The loss snaps a 7 game winning streak for the Hornets. The men are now 14-4 for the season and 9-3 in the MIAA.
Both the women and men are scheduled to host Central Oklahoma Wednesday night.
