Several fire departments from Coffey and Lyon counties battled a grass fire in western Coffey County for close to two hours Monday.
Hartford-Neosho Rapids Fire Chief Greg Zumbrunn says the fire was reported at 23rd and Contour, with his department called to respond shortly before 3 pm because the fire started in his district’s boundaries. Mutual aid was then requested from Lebo, Miller, New Strawn, Olpe and Reading within 30 minutes of the initial call.
Zumbrunn says the fire grew to around 200 acres all told and, at one point, ran about a mile before it was put out. Winds as high as 30 mph helped to push the fire.
Zumbrunn says improper disposal of wood stove ashes was the cause.
