Not surprisingly, abnormally dry conditions have expanded and now cover about half the KVOE listening area.
The latest weekly report from the US Drought Monitor has abnormally dry conditions essentially west of a line from Council Grove to Reading to Lebo. This includes Lyon County cities like Emporia, Americus, Hartford, Neosho Rapids and Olpe. It also includes all of Chase and Greenwood counties, the south half of Morris County and far west Coffey County.
Last week’s report had abnormally dry conditions affecting far west Chase and Greenwood counties.
Moisture has been in short supply since before Halloween 2021. We’ve had 0.90 inches of rainfall on Veterans Day, 0.60 inches of rain on Dec. 15, less than an inch of dry snowfall and freezing drizzle New Year’s Day and around two inches of dry snow Jan. 6. Less than an inch of snow fell Jan. 15.
